Prior to his 1969 release of "Space Oddity," David Bowie had not established a significant amount of extrinsic ethos. With the wildly successful song "Space Oddity" that made the U.K. top 5 chart, David Bowie was able to increase his extrinsic ethos with regard to the Space Race. Although heavily influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey, "Space Oddity" became linked with the British Space Program, giving David Bowie unwarranted ethos on space travel. Regardless of the initial influence for the song, the linkage of "Space Oddity" to the Space Race gave David Bowie credibility as a champion of space travel.

I agree with your statement that the song brought David Bowie fame and established his credibility to his audience through its connection to the Space Race. You also could've talked about intrinsic ethos and what parts of the song created this connection. But this was a well explained post!

^Yes.
DeleteGood post! I think you should talk about 2001: A Space Odyssey, though, because even though the song was linked more with the British Space Program, I think the audience can make some judgement about the ethos given the song's connection with the film.
ReplyDeleteI like this post and how you mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey and the British Space Program added to the extrinsic ethos of the song. I do agree with Lea that you could've mentioned the intrinsic ethos and how it ties together the song, Bowie, and the Space Race.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it might be beneficial to look into intrinsic ethos with how the lyrics related to the artist, but I think you did a good job of showing how this song really established Bowie's ethos. Hyperlinking is also something that would be beneficial to add. The reader would benefit from more information about the British Space Program and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
