The song "Space Oddity" by David Bowie was first released in 1969 just before the Apollo 11 moon landing. This was the culmination of the Space Race, which garnered a lot of attention from all around the world, including in England where "Space Oddity" was originally released. It's title is a play off the movie
2001: A Space Odessey which came out in 1968, a further indication of media interest in space exploration.
Enjoyed the mention of 2001: A Space Odyssey. While it may not play directly into what's being analyzed, it's always nice to include information solely for the reader's interest. Definitely makes reading about rhetoric more entertaining.

I think your statement of the time period and situation in which the song was written for is valid, however I believe it would have been helpful to elaborate more on how the song related to these two factors. For example, you could've wrote what the song's message was or used specific lyrics to enhance your argument.

I agree with Lea that you could've elaborated more on how the song supports your statement. A little more background information would be helpful in explaining the importance of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and then relating it to the song. Everything you said though I agree with.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the other comments on this analysis' need for more elaboration. In order to understand why this song was so popular and influential, more information needs to be provided about what the Space Race was exactly and why people cared. Also, were other songs about space travel being released by other artists, or was this the first of its kind?
ReplyDeleteExcellent questions, Taylor, and other posters. And good start, Sean! Consider these comments as you assemble your presentation.
