Audience: David Bowie "Space Oddity"

“Space Oddity” is a song written and performed by David Bowie that was released in 1969 just nine days before the Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The audience of this song includes the entire population of the western world. The wonder of space travel captured the attention of the United States. It is safe to assume that the majority of people were exposed to the importance of the Space Race, and the significance of being the first to land on the moon.

  1. I think it was effective for you to identify a large scale audience in that no specific group of people would be left out of the intended audience. However, I think it would be helpful for your cause if you expanded on the background of the space race and why it was an importance event. This will allow the reader to gain full perspective on the issue and further comprehend the topic that is being conveyed.

  2. I think that your acknowledgement of the audience as being the entire population of the western world is correct in analyzing the audience as being the group that David Bowie is trying to connect to and impact dramatically through his lyrics in his music. The song "Space Oddity" holds significance during the 60s because it was used as a segue to show the importance of Apollo 11 and preceded the Apollo 11 as the countdown to the launch of the space shuttle began.

  4. Like Ikenna and Jason I agree that identifying a broad audience was correct but I feel you could be more specific on how the space race affected the audience and how the perspective of the audience influences the way they view David Bowie's "Space Oddity". For instance I think it's important to explain what made the Space Race so significant to the Western world.

  5. I think you could be more specific when analyzing the audience. Talk more about why people would be interested in "Space Oddity" and how it would affect them. Also maybe mention how Bowie used the knowledge of who his intended audience was to structure his song so it appealed more to them.
